Increase in number of people with TB-HIV receiving ART since December 2013
The Union Zimbabwe Office has scaled up patient-centred services for integrated TB-HIV care to 46 high-volume primary facilities across the country under Challenge TB. Integrated care, where persons seeking treatment for either TB or HIV are screened and tested for the other to identify co-infection, is essential for infection control and proper treatment in Zimbabwe, which ranks on the WHO’s list of high-burden countries for both.
This intervention has led to an increase in the number of people co-infected with TB-HIV on antiretroviral therapy (ART) from 74 percent in December 2013 to 93 percent in June 2017 in the areas covered by this project.
Challenge TB is funded by USAID. The model of care established under the Challenge TB programme has since been adopted by the Ministry of Health and Child Care and will be scaled up to all health facilities in the country with additional support from the Global Fund.
